Chapter Ten

Beloved

Level 31 wasn't a particularly exciting one.

Still, it was progress. Points to put in vital abilities, bridging the gap between Dare and a Level 35. And he wasn't the only one making progress.

Ilin and Leilanna had both reached Level 27. Zuri was 28. And while Pella and Ireni were still Level 30, they were making slow but steady progress towards 31 as well.

Still, he was leveling much faster than the others in spite of the difficulty bump at 30. And that would only increase with them making their slow, cautious progress as he blazed ahead.

While he still wished he could keep on adventuring with them, he now had plenty of motivation to get as high level as possible.

It was his duty to defend his family and provide for them. Against any threat, in any situation. And the best way to make sure he could do that was to get to a level only a few had achieved.

Then surpass them.

That evening everyone wanted to celebrate him gaining a level. Se'weir cooked a special meal, shooing him out of the kitchen when he tried to help, and they gathered around the table talking and laughing.

The group had also had a productive day, even if no one had gained a level. But they'd gotten a lot of loot and had some exciting encounters. Dare felt a bit wistful listening to their adventures, wishing he could be with them.

Maybe in the future, when their situation was more stable. When he was ridiculously high level and the loot he brought in from a week of farming could support the family for a year.

Unfortunately, it seemed his leveling was going to be slowed down.

At a natural break in the conversation Ireni cleared her throat, expression solemn. “My love, if you'll recall you promised to be there when Rosie produces her seed.”

Dare blinked. “That's right.” He glanced over at the simple calendar they'd hung on the wall at his suggestion, even more surprised at what he saw: it was already the 28th of Pir, the equivalent of September on Collisa. “Holy shit, it's already been almost that long?”

She smiled. “Time flies when you're having fun.” The others looked confused by the Earth expression. “In any case you have enough time to get down there in a week if you leave tomorrow.”

He looked around at his lovers and Ilin, frowning. “Now's not a good time to take a trip all the way down there, though. Not with Ollivan maybe planning to cause trouble, and the progress we've been making leveling.”

Leilanna looked offended. “Are you saying you'd break your promise?” Given her people's insistence on honor that would be particularly appalling to her.

Pella nodded firmly. “You can't do that to Rosie. A promise is a promise.”

“I wasn't planning to,” Dare protested. “I'm just saying it's a bad time.” He looked around. “Should we all go, then?”

Zuri and Se'weir both frowned. “I don't want to travel with an infant,” his goblin lover said firmly, the gentle hobgoblin nodding in agreement.
